Black bagged
« on: February 12, 2013, 20:12 »
Hi All

Ive rcently finished clearing my new plot and have about 30 black bin bags filled with couch grass.

Does anybody know how long i will have to leave it to rot in the bags before i can put it in the compost bin?
If i were to drown the stuff, would that be quicker?

thanks

I'd leave it at least until the end of the summer and make sure it gets all the heat going

You can always open up a bag then to see how it is getting along

I drown mine in a bucket - with the volume you have I reckon you'd more likely need a swimming pool - or dessicate it on the stone slabs before adding to the compost, but again rather much to deal with like this

Hello sunshine  :)

How long do you drown it for?
I have one of those big blue water butts so could maybe do it in batches.
Want rid of the blooming stuff

Until it is well slimy and smells bad --- about two weeks in summer but would take longer in cold weather.

You can always stick the lid on and forget about it for three months or so I guess
