a couple of things to ask
« on: February 14, 2013, 18:10 »
two things,
first with all this rain how are we ever going to get potatoes in the ground without rotting! i have put a black cover down which i am hoping stops some water. doubt it though as it has rained here in the channel islands for about 9 weeks solid!
and another thing has anyone tried copper tape on allotments to stop slugs? i was thinking of using it as a barrier as i always forget slug pellets. some advice would be good if anyone has tried it

If ground is still saturated when planting your spuds, dig your hole and line it with some course compost, plant your spud then cover with more compost. Keep them covered with polythene or the like if a deluge is forecast which will heat the soil nicely too.

I won't even consider planting my spuds for another 4-6 weeks, so patience is fine  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I did see in a gardening mag once that someone had put copper pipping around the edge of their plot which had been relatively successful, so tape may work.

The ops shows his location as the Channel Island so much warmer than the mainland
I don't know where you are cos you haven't put your location in your profile so I can't compare yours with his  ;)

hmm i had not thought of that, that helps tonnes. i thought i would give it a try and see, might save a few of my plants  :D will tell you all how it goes over the year

spuds i am not planting till mid march anyways, but in the channel islands we very rarely get frost like the uk, the sea air stops the snow. i dont really want to waste my time digging tonnes if they just rot in the ground, but will wait about another month.

going to be my first day hopefully back at the allotment this weekend so many ideas for this year :)

I can't see you having a problem.

Jersey Royals have never failed to appear in the shops! (I know you're in Guernsey, but it's near enough!).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It is a great idea, but wouldn't last five minutes at our site - the light-fingered types that cash in on scrap metal would help themselves very quickly.
