Holy chuff its been hot. 33 degrees driving today, still about 25 now. Watered those that needed it, weeded some and harvested the last of the softneck garlics (too early, but worried about the weather breaking).

Cut the borders, harvested the winter onions, hoed and watered
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

Finished making my compost bin, planted a few carrot, beetroot and spring onion seeds to see what I can get before the end of the season. Watered and dug up a few potatoes too.

Picked and hubby dug some more. Approaching 3/4 of the plot dug over now.  :D

brought home all the garlic and half the onions, all now drying out on the worktops  :)

Following the thread on cucumbers and male flowers, I looked at my La Diva to take off the male flowers and to nip them out at 6 leaves.  Didn't do either....there wasn't any male flowers that I could see and it is way too late to nip them out, I couldn't bear to cut off all that lovely growth, so I nipped a couple of tips out randomly.

The last of the winter onions has keeled over, so I loosened them and laid them out to dry on the soil surface, like the books say you are supposed to(but I still don't know why). The ground under them is rock hard.

As far as understand it.  You dry them otherwise they will go rotten in storage.  This applies particularly to the top bit where the onion changes into a stem.  You will tie the Onions together using the stems and so this must be free of moisture before you do it.  This way they can store, in a cool dark place, for four months.  The reason for leaving them outside is to not force dry them but to let them dry in their own time.
Thanks Bob, I suppose if they are allowed to dry a bit on the soil it means they can be spread out a bit more to let the air around them, before they are gathered up to dry on a rack. Always provided it doesn't pour in the next few days. ::)

Is it odd that I harvested my summer onions while everyone else seems to be harvesting winter grown onions?

At last it's been cool enough  (28c as opposed to the 36c it's been for the last couple of weeks) to get in the p/tunnel to do some weeding!! I could just stay in long enough to do the watering previously. Tho' every thing in there is doing well.

We didnt make it up the hill tonight as an email offer of free slabs came in so that took priority as the man needs them gone within a few days.

They need the concrete cleaning off the backs which is making the collection slower as it doubles the weight Of the slabs.  ::) but a freebie is a freebie  :D

They are two foot slabs so they will make the centre path on dads plot.
