No, the bit about french beans in the garden is a fib!

The others will grow in a heated greenhouse as stated - if you can afford the fuel to keep them warm enough

Potatoes in a heated greenhouse in winter does sound a bit extravagant!

I know they've gone up in price in the shops this year but they'd have to be £1 each to make it worthwhile keeping a greenhouse at 10˚ in mid winter!

And I'd like to meet the person in England who's harvested french beans in April.

My first early potatoes will be ready in June and they get planted end of March.... 12 weeks to be ready so June... potatoes in the GH now would be a total waste of money to be spent on heating...

I think there must be a town called United Kingdom in some warm / temperate zone in Africa somewhere!! Who was the Email from... they need to be shot at dawn or left in the frost to catch a tan in the warm zone in December!!     :D  :D  :D  :D  :D
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

It looks like it's you that's selected warm/temperate for the UK, rather than temperate/cool. There is that option.

If you do so the beans disappear!

The spuds are still there though, but it's theoretically possible, if costly.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Exactly so Double D.

I live in Kent (both south and east UK) and would definitely call it cool/temperate at this time of year.

The only things I sow in December are onions, and they don't always make it

For those who haven't already seen it the effect that soil temperature has on germination rates and times is here (with a special mention in dispatches for onion seeds.)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I can get onions to germinate ok - it's keeping them alive afterwards that I have the problem with  ::) They're nearly as bad as cucumbers IMO  :(
