My granddad has eighty years of growing and hen-keeping know-how in sunny bristol...But doesn't know what advice to give me for our lovely ice-haven here. Now, he sent me some of his shallots via post and told me to plant the babies on the shortest day and harvest on the longest, then added that he wasn't so sure of that. He is in his nineties now, so without upsetting him, could someone please fill me in? He'll be delighted if I send him pictures of an insanely good crop; I shan't be telling him I used someone else's advice though
