I agree SG.  If you have no experience of auctions (like me) you could end up with sheep by mistake

Find a good local supplier, go and see the chooks (POL, 15-17 weeks is my choice for age), talk to the supplier, check the chooks history and vaccinations.  Pick out the ones which take your fancy and give them a good look over for dirty bums, snotty noses, tired eyes, passengers etc.   Make sure they look energetic and alert.  If you're concerned about clipping a wing yourself ask the supplier if they would do it or at least show you how.   It's really very easy but many people worry about doing it.

Take them home and enjoy.  Keep them in their run for about 5 days so that they know where home is and what they should be eating - Layers pellets for mine with a side dish of oyster and poultry grit washed down with lovely fresh water.  They should start laying when they are about 24ish weeks old, and the eggs will be....

FANTASTIC   :D

Lovely picture SG!

You won't need large feeders for only 3 birds.  The sizes you sugest would seem fine to me .

My husband is in the middle of making a coop, as we had a lot of wood in the garage (he collects it and likes to make fires and built things), but I had wondered about SIDEBOARDS! The funky 70's ones are under a tenner on Ebay, and free on freecycle if you're in it! Folk seem to just want rid. Then you could just mess about with the doors, etc to make the type of set up you fancy. I mentioned this on Money Saving Expert and they all seemed to think it was a fab idea, most of the old stylie ones are on legs too to save the chickens from the damp  :D

Sorry if that seemed quite random - I started reading the thread without noticing the date, then the baby started so I posted in a rush without reading the other posts. Hmmpf. Sorry,   bouncing off walls again! Lol!

Well since I now have my plot i will have space in the veg patch at home and I am looking to get a few chickens..

What do you think of this coop? worth that kind of cash? this has ended but I know they have loads of them for sale..

I bought 2 of these they are rubbish for chickens far to small, the only birds that would fit were my 2 Polish Bantums its just about right for them
Don't touch them!!
