yesterday morning i let the girls out , checked the nest box and collected 1 egg. then later that day i cleaned out the coop and pen and as soon as i put fresh bedding in a very nosey hen jumped in the nest box, started to make a hollow in the hay and layed an egg and this was at 3pm???

is this normal to lay so late?
normally they lay after about an hour of being let out in the morning?

Hello Mandarincloth,
As I understand it the average laying cycle for a hen is 25 hours so the times of laying can vary and I have read posts here reporting hens that lay two eggs in one day.  I don't think there is a set time of day for hens to lay.  I'm sure someone more experienced will be along to give you more specific advice.

I had to go and let one of my girls back in the other night as she was in the box when the pop hole went down.  It goes down when almost dark, it was about 6 pm .

They lay all during the day, and even sometimes on the roost!
