Final fruit addition, Suggestions?
« on: January 23, 2011, 21:22 »
Hi all,

Will be finishing of all the structural work and permanent planting on the lotty this week, hopefully meaning all the hard work is out the way for a while. I have a 7ftx3ft bed left and would like to plant some fruit there. We have some raspberrys as home as well as some gooseberrys so would like something a bit different.

Was thinking along the lines of Logan/Tayberry bush but not at all sure about there growing habits. Ideally i would like something to eventually train to fit the bed nicely and be able to keep fairly tidy. Any suggestions much appreciated.

Totty

I think you could get away with a couple of currents or maybe blueberries?

Our loganberry is about 20' wide and our blackcurrant bushes about 5' across, (they get bigger everytime I prune them), so one loganberry and a couple of blackcurrants is out in my book.

What about strawberries? You'd get a few in a bed that size and they'd be easily netted against the birds.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

blackberries. High yields, upright and freeze well. I also like tayberries, winberries etc for same reasons.
But if it was me with that space spare it would go to asparagras though. (I know it is not a fruit nor is it herbaceaous perennial like rhubarb or is it??).

If it was me, blueberries (you'll need at least 2 if not more) or currants (red, white and/or black)

We have currents, rhubarb, strawberrys in the garden. In a way it would be nice to grow tayberrys or logans as my grandad always had them but im not sure about the complexities of traing them in the area i have. All your suggestions are still appreciated!! :)
