Onions ready for potting up?
« on: January 19, 2011, 18:36 »
Hi all, I sowed some big onion seed on boxing day into individual cells, I would like to move them into pots but the rootball isn't going to hold together as there are only a few roots, some roots are coming out of the bottom of the cells. Will they be ok to pot up or should I wait until a better rootball forms?

Dunno if this the right way, or not, but I leave mine in modules (small sized ones at that) until planting out, and by then the roots are all coiled round. I straighten out the roots when planting out.

Thanks for your help, I am hoping to grow some large onions and would like to keep them growing steady without any check to their growth, I presume they will need a stronger compost before they are ready for the garden. They are currently in a seed compost. What do people think?

I'm not an onion expert, but seed compost will have few nutrients.

I'd be tempted to go to John Innes No.1 for young plants.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have tried onion seed for the first time, mine are about 2" high now, how big should they be when I transplant them out in March ?

Onions sown 19-Feb, Pictures from 15-April (ones at the front were from a later sowing, I realised I hadn't done enough!) and 24-June

Excellent. Far exceeded my expectation - in the sense that I have always grown from Sets before, never had such good onions, and I had only one or two "bolters".

Mine were a lot later "dying down" than I expected, but that's about it.

I am looking forward to the results of mine this year as it's the first time I have tried onion bulbs from seed, I moved my seedlings into my cold frame today so fingers crossed.

Mine are in the frost free greenhouse, I wouldn't let them loose in the unheated one yet!
