Lady Balfour spuds, how long do they take?
« on: August 16, 2010, 21:14 »
This is the first time I've grown this variety, I want the space soon to plant green manure but the haulms still  look very green (they were planted in early March). Can anyone tell me how long Lady Balfour grow for?
Last years main crop spuds were up by now (if I remember correctly). The green manure bag says that it should be sown before the end of September so I'm starting to worry a bit. Thanks.

This says it's a maincrop so should be left until the foliage dies down for full maturity.

That being said, there's nothing to stop you harvesting them young.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks for the info Yorkie, yes, I could just lift them early. As a matter of interest, do other people still  have maincrop tats growing? on my allotment site there are only eleven other plots and my spuds are the only ones still growing everyone else has lifted theirs and have other crops planted.

I still have half of my King Teds in and most of my Golden Wonder which are late maincrop.
I keep checking them everyday for blight and have been lucky so far.
I am just lifting them as I need them untill the haulms start to go over.
