Geese and Chickens
« on: June 09, 2010, 14:16 »
We're thinking about raising a couple of young geese for Christmas but I'm not sure whether they will get on with our chickens. Has anyone got any experience of this? Will they mix ok in the same run as it's plenty big enough and they will have a separate Goose Hoose

I have no experience of either but had a friend who had both and she had some problems. The geese took a dislike to her chickens (well mainly the buff Orpingtons for some reason) and would really attack them. The chickens (being a bit stupid) would see this huge goose heading for it and decide it must be a big cockerel and crouch for it and just get attacked. She unfortunately lost a couple of them I believe.

Only one anecdote and I think most except the buffs were fine but she did have to keep them seperate especially when they were young.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Mmm, thanks for that, looks like I may have to consider alternative accommodation

I've had geese, ducks and chooks all penned together and had no problems at all, in fact my remaining goose who I hatched myself tends to guard the girls and keep a watchful eye out for them. They have even boarded together without coming to blows.

We had geese and chooks in the same yard , the geese tended to foul the drinking water and can transmit diseases because of it.

I was going to have geese as guard geese but got advised not to have them with chickens as there can be problems so ended up with guinea fowl. Just as good at guarding (in fact far noisier) but apart from one having a dislike to a couple of chickens and the other falling in love with another chicken (you are not allowed to go anywhere near this girl  ::)) they are fine  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.
