Geese and Chickens
« on: November 11, 2008, 20:33 »
Have a chance at keeping a breeding pair of young geese and think its to good to miss out on.....BUT

Never had them before and wondered is there any pit falls.

I've a large coop and run.....

As posted before.

I would be thinking about setting them up in there own house/coop whatever you call geese homes. But would I be wise or not to put the house into the same run as the chickens or is it better to set them up on there own run, in fact do they even need a run. Is the house/coop just a shelter and to protect them.
AAAAaarrrrgggghhhhhh......

Help?
Cheers,

Paula

Geese are fantastic :D
Always scared of them till I got my Crumb, I've got 5 now

Geese need a secure house for overnight, floor space of 5-8 square foot per bird.
And I keep mine separate from the hens & ducks at night.
My birds all run together during the day with out any problems but they are free range, on the odd occasion they have been in a smaller area together we have had chicken grabbing and geese don't like letting go

They are relatively easy to look after so long as they have lots of grass :D
But I would recommend the area to be fox proof , they will take a goose no messing

Thank for the compliment I do try to keep my animals whether they be chucks or goldfish in the best possible conditions as they all give us a lot in return.

Sarah,

Is your geese house in a run of its own or out on its own?

Would a secure house for them bee sufficant letting them free range all day. And do they need a pond or water feature like ducks would. haven't ventured into ducks due to not having this water for them.

sorry for all the Q.s

Thanks

My geese are in my garage at night completely separate to the others :)

But during the day this is the area my Chickens, Ducks & Geese share

All this area is fenced :)
They can be separate to the house during the day ie out in a field and you can walk them back to their house every night.

Pond wise to begin with Crumb had a paddling pool and she loved it, even now with a "proper" pond she still favours the pool

Nice,

Thanks, Will they return to their house buy them selves or do you have to walk them all the time?

If on the odd occasion I have been late going to put them to bed they have always made their way towards the garage but won't actually go in till I'm there :(

Geese like ducks have very good night vision so unlike chickens who put themselves to bed geese will quite happily stay out
