chickens in with geese??
« on: July 20, 2011, 18:47 »
hi,

i have a pair of geese that i wanted to give more space to as i can now extend my run.

Can i put the geese in with the chickens as they will now have a much larger space to roam, approx 25m x 45m is the size of the chicken run which they will all share.

Some geese can be agressive towards chickens - even killing them on occasion, but you won't know really what's going to happen until you put them together. Saying that, my neighbour keeps geese with his hens and they get on well with them all apart from the cockerel, who tends to bully them - and they are three times the size of him!

So put them in, but keep a close eye.

I agree, they should be alright, my friend has some small geese and they can be a little mean to the chickens!  But I think they should be ok, just as Helena says, keep a close eye on them  ;)

we have geese, chickens and call ducks on our farm. Whilst the chickens and geese may mix during the day as they roam free we pen them separately at night. A lot depends on the temperament of the birds themselves but would allow somewhere the chickens can go if they feel threatened that the geese can not get to should be OK and give separate sleeping quarters. Would introduce solely at first allowing them to see each other but be separate and see how it goes. Good luck
