Fleas in hens
« on: June 08, 2010, 23:04 »
I believe they are called stick fast fleas as they clump together, i know cats can get them as i have had experience of this.
How do you treat them in Hens, can you use a diluted mixture of frontline? Is there a special spray for it?
Dont count ya chickens till they hatch!!!!!

I'm lucky not to have ever had chicken fleas on my chooks, but some of the members here use frontline for kittens.  Joyfull says it is good and seems to prevent red mite too, although I've never used it.

I am sure i have read it on here somewhere grannie annie, just couldn't find it, thankfully i haven't got them, ooppps neither have my birds, it was a question that i got asked today.
although as i said in my first post, one of my cats has had them on his ears as i believe the flea will only go where there is no fur or feathers

There aren't many places on a chicken that are featherless Donna! lol  The lice apparently lay their eggs on the feather follicles in little clumps.

The only time we had lice here was when we were plucking some chickens for someone else and her birds had them on.  Yuck nasty things were running all over my hands as I was trying to pluck the chicken!  :(

You just drip one little spot n the back of the chickens neck like you do with cats, just separate the feathers so you can reach the skin.

Grannie do you dilute it? or use the pipette like the ones you use for cats and dogs?

I use the frontline spray, but with the drops no you don't dilute it  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.
