Growing Horseradish in Pots
« on: April 01, 2010, 12:30 »
My horseradish roots have arrived!

5 of them, about 4" long each.

I've got a couple of large pots, was planting to put 2-and-3 roots in each.

Does it matter which way up I plant the roots? No obvious way of knowing which was "up" before is there? (no "tuft" from the top of the plant, although I might be able to guess from any root-hairs pointing downwards).

I read somewhere to plant the roots at 45-degree angle.

Any other tips would be appreciated, thanks.

thats fine, plant as you see fit.

Remember not to let them escape into the garden as it will take over and your garden/plot witll turn into Horseradish city!! Its is VERY invasive.... a total thug..

Thanks for that.

Googling for inspiration on which way up the roots go I saw plenty of people saying they had "plunged" the pots, or rested them on "bark and weed fabric" and then couldn't lift the pots as the roots had gone right through the bottom heading for Oz!

So I'll stand on a concrete paving slab (I assume that will be dense enough?  :tongue2:)

I just chopped some roots off last years crop, slapped them (vertically) in a pot of compost and then overwatered them the whole of winter ( which they spent in an unheated non-frost-free greenhouse ) ... and they've still lived ;)

Just don't be surprised if you see little root legs come out from under the pot and walk away  ;) :D
