Tomato Wigwams
« on: March 26, 2010, 11:58 »
Has anyone tried growing outdoor tomatoes up wigwams?  I think the idea was that stout canes or sticks tied wigwam fashion were more supportive, especially when the crop got heavy.  Any thoughts would be appreciated, thank you  :)

Unless they were tall  wigwams then would'nt they be getting narrower (at the top) just where the toms need the most support ....just a thought!

Thanks Mum.  I sure your right :)  I read about it and gave it a go about 3 years but the tomatoes got blighted very early on so I never got the chance to find out.  :(

I'm not a fan of wigwams for growing anything for the reasons Mum suggests; whatever you grow up them is bound to be congested at the top to the detriment of the plants (especially tomatoes as you are probably creating a blight-friendly microclimate there)

Also, a densely-covered wigwam is very difficult to reach inside to pick the produce.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older
