Pentland Javelin. When to harvest
« on: June 15, 2009, 13:47 »
Hi

I planted my Pentlands on 12/04. Not sure if earlies flower, as mine haven't as yet. When do I know if they are ready to dig up?

Thanks

According to my book they are a "late" first early.  My earlies are only just getting ready so it might be a few weeks yet for yours.

Mine went in April 2nd. Dug some up this morning. About 16 decent egg size ones per plant.

No flowers showing. They don't always.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Its the 1st time growing anything so what can I plant when I have dug up all my potatoes.

The soil wasn't brilliant that is why I planted the spuds as I was told they would help to break the soil.

Traditionally leeks previously started in a seedbed or tray.

I follow mine with courgettes and sweetcorn - but they, like the tatties are hungry feeders so you do need to feed the soil to do that.

If you haven't got anything ready take a trip to a garden centre and see what small plants you can buy.

The RHS said ~100-110 days for first earlies, but this sounds as though you're all digging them up a little earlier than that.

My earlies went in March 21st, so 100 days would be about july 1st.

74 days and they are fine.

The RHS time period could be that to full maturity, which is not needed if you want "new" spuds.
