Plastic containers
« on: January 20, 2016, 18:07 »
I used to grow vegetables in just about any container going, but recently I have been reading on the internet that certain plastics are unsafe, particularly those using PVC.

Everything I can find seems to be US oriented, as I have not seen any recycling numbers on plastic over here telling you what group it is in.

I have been using plastic storage containers made by addis and curver, which I have had for over twenty years now and I have no idea what kind of plastic they are made of.

Should I stop using them for vegetables and herbs, or is it all unscientific organic hype?

I am presuming anything that I bought a plant in, that is to say commercial plastic plant pots is safe.  To me one of the advantages of growing certain crops in plastic containers is that I can ring them round with copper anti slug tape, it is my peppers, tomatoes and certain herbs that I have been mostly growing this way.

Unsafe, in what way? Like Mick, I've been using them longer than I care to remember, and I too am ok. Except my hair fell out!

You'd have to start asking if flower pots are made from 'safe' materials?

Is the plastic watering can ok? Oh, but the metal one is galvanised and that is coated with zinc which isn't good for you, probably contains lead as well.

Did the comost arrive in a 'safe' plastic bag?

What happens to the residue when that old chicken wire corodes in the soil. But I don't use galvanised chicken wire I use plastic mesh. Doesn't that contain plasticisers which are bad for you.

And on and on ......

That's the world we now live in, I think you will encounter many things that are going to harm you more than the plastic in a container you may use as a plant pot.
