recycling plastic containers
« on: May 24, 2010, 11:27 »
I need plenty of 5 litre pots to pot on tomatoes, aubergines, peppers and cucumbers and as these are quite expensive I was wondering if I could recycle the clear plastic tubs which contained fat balls and worms for the birds  and also white tubs which contained fish food as we have plenty of these.

Is there any reason not to use clear or white tubs?

I think most roots dislike sun but you could get past this when using clear stuff by putting a black bin liner in before you fill it up with compost.

I'd suggest white "flip-top" bin liners rather than black for the clear containers as it reflects sunlight better.

Don't forget the drainage holes in both liners and pots!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thanks for that - I will get drilling drainage holes straight away.

I just checked out the price of flowerpots in Homebase and the 10" ones are £2.79 each.  They did have some decorative ones for £1.99 so I got some of those but I needs loads as I can't bear to throw my spare tomato plants away.  Am I alone in this?

Morrison's flower buckets, 99p for 8 last time I bought some, (got 16 actually with a buy 8 get 8 free offer). There's a store at Clevedon, not far from you, although I can't guarantee they'll have any in!

Other big stores may give them away as well.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You can pick up 5L  buckets at most florists cheap as they normally have a shed full out the back. Our florist does some stackable rectangular 10L buckets which are very handy for plants, loft storage , chicken transporting only 50p each. :)
