Too late to plant asparagus?
« on: November 30, 2013, 00:14 »
Does the team think it is too late to plant autumn planting asparagus? Or would I be best to wait until spring?

If you don't try it you'll never know. If they don't take you could always buy some replacements next year.
If you decide to go ahead try to give them frost protection as that is more likely to do damage than anything else apart from giving them a waterlogged site which you are hardly likely to do. I've covered mine with a waterproof covering over a thick mulch to keep them dry (ish) so that they don't freeze over the winter.
Asparagus are dormant at the moment so should be alright in good conditions.
The only reason I've put mine in now is because in the Spring there are too many other things to do but if time is not a concern for you then waiting might not be a bad option.

Wait until Spring. That is when the asparagus growers will be lifting fresh plants, which are better than the packeted specimens you will get now. When they have lifted them they store them in a chiller to keep them dormant so they can be available until about mid-May. So plenty of time to prepare the bed.

Good point!  :) I can get a couple of barrows of manure at the weekend and put it on to stew over the winter.

That settles it!

Manure on today, and bed maturing as we speak. ;)
