I purchased a bag of Peat free Multi Purpose compost from B & Q a few weeks ago.
The bag has been left open in the greenhouse & a White Type Fungi you could call if has attached itself to the compost,seems as though it is more or less all the way down to the bottom.
The Compost is very Compacted.
Can anyone help with this please.
Should it be OK to use or NOT.??

are you sure its not the twigs in the compost that have gone white? sometimes when opening a bag of compost it dos have white chunks, but these are the twigs that are rotting - they do have a type of fungi on them but i dont think they are harmful!

mine is the same from b and q it has White mould growing on it and mine is in the house I'm a bit concerned about it

funnily enought this thread appeared just as i was posting how good I've found this compost in the 2012 Compost thread.

Was this branded as B&Q or their new own-brand Verve? If the former, it's likely to be old stock. I've had some mycelium growing through compost in the past and not worried about it too much, just stirred it up and kept it on the dry side. The significant proportion of wood in peat-frees does mean they are more attractive to fungi, but most of these are 'dead-wood-eaters' and so no threat to living plants

compost doesn't have a sell by date that I'm aware of.  It was compost last year and its still compost this year.  Just as valuable, just as useful.  Anything that grows in it is also compostable or part of the composting process so it not going to make noticeable difference.

If you drink bottled water thats probably older than the compost

True, but you do have to allow for some decomposition and oxidisation...if you wait long enough the bags will end up empty! And inevitably they're not 100% waterproof so nutrients will wash out over time. If old compost still feels and smells OK I'd use it but might stir in a bit of BFB or something

Haha very true but theres no use in worrying about it.  Just don't buy compost as an investment - it wont go up and will rot down!
