Garlic: Should I Ask for a Refund?
« on: January 09, 2012, 14:29 »
Evening,

Just got some garlic in the post today, from the popular Isle of Wight range. When I picked up the pack I was pleased to get a strong whiff of garlic, but when I opened it up I was disappointed to see rather than full bulbs as advertised, they were odd cloves floating about looking pretty sorry for themselves. The husks are looking rather degraded  and the cloves are also looking withered. Worst of all though is that a few of the cloves are going mouldy. Also, smelled up close they smell less of garlic and more like a certain body fluid. See below for photos.

Since I have not ordered garlic for planting before I am unsure as to:

1 - if this is acceptable or not
2 - will the cloves grow

I would send a copy of this photo to the company that sold the garlic to you, I can only assume the bulbs got crushed in the post (hence why they are split) which is down to poor packaging. Also send a copy of the packaging to them.
Staffies are softer than you think.

That's terrible !  >:(

Send a picture and an email to them, even if they have been crushed in the post they shouldn't be covered in rot !

I had some soft cloves in my Solent Wight and asked for a replacement. The replacement was worse so I phoned back and asked them to check what they were bagging up next time  :nowink:  There's no hassle though with asking for replacements so don't be timid  :)

Had a similar issue with a well known seed company... the condition of the onions and garlic they sent me was shocking... all moldy, and smelt like they'd been stored somewhere damp. I just described the problem and they offered a replacement or refund. I took the refund.
Any seed that you buy should be in perfect condition, no quibbles. You're paying a premium for quality.

Just out of interest, David. Did you peel those few, or were they/did they fall out of husks?

I peeled them down to see which ones were not moulded. Sound ones are at the bottom.

The sad fact is that the quality of goods these days is appalling,  but the cost keeps on soaring. Don't even hesitate to send the garlic back and ask for compensation for wasting your time.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Oh gosh david 64 - definitely ring up and complain! That's simply not acceptable! I was going to order from them this year too...but then I bought some from the garden centre that DD.put me onto a couple of years ago.

RangerKris....it's so cold and it'll be very cold from Thursday...why don't you put the garlic in pots and put in greenhouse as suggested by our beloved leader here on the forum? I thought I  was too late to plant in the ground, so watched one of John's videos.
