Yard Long Beans
« on: December 23, 2011, 16:49 »
Anyone tried growing these? I've seen very good reports of their taste and quality, but they seem to be a bit more tender than other climbing beans. How well do they cope outdoors in our weather?

Hi Shokkyy,

I tried them this year but they were a failure, however I think it was the weather we had so I will give them another go this year.  My main runner beans were not so hot this year either.  My Borlotti beans were good last year and a poor showing this year.

On the plus side I had a huge crop of Climbing French Beans so I will keep putting in at least three different types of beans so I will get a crop regardless of the weather.

I would say, they need the greenhouse most summers here.

Tried them once had five flowers (purple) and got one skinny bean about 9" long. >:(

Gave them up as a waste of greenhouse space !

I've not grown yard long beans, but i have grown imperial longpod broad beans

They did really well this year. The flowers were beautiful and the pods were huge with at least 9 beans in each one.
I found they were quite resistant to caterpillars too.

Tried to grow them the year before last, plenty of foliage but no pods/beans. It's just not warm enough for long enough here I believe.
