Yard long beans ?
« on: April 13, 2009, 16:33 »
I have just been given a few yard long beans to plant . If anybody has grown and eaten these please tell me, are they  a worthwhile novelty or a complete waste of greenhouse space?

I'm no expert but I thought beans went outside. Mine always do but never tried yard long ones.

I think these come from warmer climes , tiny french bean colour seeds about 8mm long. No latin name on the packet but also called chinaman beans which i`m just about to Google.

Found this http://www.kitazawaseed.com/seed_174-11.html

I wonder if they are any better than french beans .

Hi, i tried them outside and they died, so i think they are greenhouse plants.

The last 2 summers were a waste of them and I found setting problems in the GH, otherwise well worth it, IMO and I'm wildly guessing at a decent summer... :D

If it's warm enough, they do get near a yard, 70 cm is more likely.

I've seen them for sael in our local indian shop and they come from asia - no, really )
so I guess they'd do best in a greenhouse or polytunnel I reckin

Well, the first thing i`ve learned about yardlong beans is they grow like stink!
I put them in a propagator on top of the wall units in the kitchen last thursday and forgot about them till today. They obviously liked the heat , 6 out of 7 seeds grew and are 4"-7" high.
I think  maybe i have started them too early!

It may not be too early, but your main problem, in common with many others, is not keeping an eye, if not both  on the propagator!

The seeds need to come out or the lid come off as soon as the seeds pop up, otherwise it all end in tears! :(

I don't have this problem. I don't own a propagator! :tongue2:
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

When i say propagator i mean 2 x meat container , cheap and effective. Seed to 7" in 7 days is mighty quick for a bean, healthy though not too leggy and now soaking up the sunshine in the porch . :)
