Buying Joan J raspberry in East Devon
« on: October 11, 2011, 18:34 »
I thought I'd take a chance on asking this. Does anyone know of a really good garden centre in East Devon that is likely to sell a good range of bare root raspberry plants this Autumn?

I'm hoping to get some Joan J but the P&P on Internet orders is a bit steep. In fact I did buy some from a 'well known' internet supplier but they all turned out to be dead. Meaning no raspberries this year. :(

Also my local centres haven't sold this variety over the last three Autumns.

Just wonderin.

Are based in Castle Cary, Somerset, which is probably not too far away from you. I don't know what they charge P & P if you do order on line, but their prices seem good to start with.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks DD but their P&P prices are pretty high to me, and with a minimum order too.

"Minimum Order: £25 before delivery & VAT.

How much does Delivery Cost?
All retail deliveries are charged at £9.49 plus VAT Except....."

Perhaps I'm just a cheapscate.

Anyway, I think I'll contact a couple of local garden centres and see if I can order some in specially.

Cheers.

The main point of the post is that they are in the neighbouring county to East Devon. Sounds like an excuse for a drive out to me - and not too far! (or did you miss that).

I'm thinking of using them as I want to replace a 36" row of useless summer raspberries!

Hi

Not sure what they sell exactly but Monkton Elms in Taunton is very good generally as is Willowbrook Nursery  or Blackdown Garden Centre near Wellington or Otter Nursery near Ottery St Mary in East Devon and would all be worth a phone call as they do provide quality products.

It`s plenty early enough for bare root raspberries, but I was in the garden centre at Trago Mills, Newton Abbott during the winter a few years ago and they had an excellent selection.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

As above.

You may have noticed from their site that Ashridge Trees do not ship until November.

I was thinking about a plant swap type thing.

Is there no one with a Joanne J that has any runners?

Not sure of the price for postage but could one or two of these be posted to you, free plants and a small postage cost?

Just wondered if there was anyone else who had or wanted any of these fruit plants Gooseberry, red currant, black currant (etc).

Could send some free cuttings to propogate themselves?

Just a thought as prices seem to be on the rise and i don't think the suppliers need to charge the prices that they do for postage! (not sure but the postage costs do seem a little steep sometimes)

Sorry DD. Senior moment on my part. You're quite right - could be a pleasant day out.
