Washing potatoes before storing?

I don't normally wash my potatoes.  However, a few years back it was extremely wet around harvest time.  My soil is quite heavy so they were really caked in wet mud.  I washed the lot then dried them in the dinning room for a few days (probably nearer a week actually).  They stored just as well as they normally do.
