I love shallots more than onions, they are the zenith of alliums, the gourmet of the onion world but you need the humble onion for the day to day stuff.  I'd say the shallot is sweeter, but having grown those red onions of Florence this yea,r it could be argued that they're not  :D  A shallot tart is a wondrous thing, all sticky and caramelised.   So, to sum up, if you're a cook you're going to want to grow both

Veg growing for me is about variety and I want to grow all sorts to give me the best choice of ingredients for cooking.  It's like growing different varieties of squash, each has its own qualities once cooked so what might be good for say mash would be no good in curry, if you get my drift.

And anyway ...  :D  You just have to do both to complete your veg growing repertoire  :)

Yes, good thinking.  Fortunately I have but if push came to shove I'd still grow both and lose the peas  :D

I grow onions both red and white, we use them for cooking and fresh in salads but i can't think what i would use shallots for?

And i could grow more onions in the space i have by not growing shallots.

Just me not having enough imagination i guess.

You have nailed it right there  :D

Are you the cook?  If you grow to cook, you'd definitely be growing both.   Raw wise, I use onions and keep my shallots for gourmet din dins

I am the main cook yes.

My OH cooks the best Spagbol and Shepherds Pie ever but other than that it's me.

Although to be honest i don't like cooked onion unless it's chopped very very finely for use in say a stew to add body to the flavour.

My OH loves onion especially the slimey hot dog style.    :nowink:

Don't get him riled up over the peas. He's already steaming over heated propagators
