Help needed - broody hen
« on: July 20, 2011, 18:17 »
Hello

My White sussex has gone broody.

I have been looking on here to see what is the best thing to do. I do not want her to hatch anyging, so I need to unbroody her. I have a dog crate I can put her in, so, do I keep her in it day and night or put her in the coop at night?
She has access to food and water, she is still laying ( or at least I think she is, I can't tell who laid what yet)

Any help would be gratefully received

Thanks

Viky

i put mine back in the coop over night but leave in the crate for at least two days during the day. One of mine just wont stop being broody so i just leave her now. nothing i do makes any difference.

Welcome to the forum  :)

I agree with Rachel that the dog crate is worth a try.   Just make sure that they have food, drink and are out of the worst of the weather.  Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you, I have put her in a crate with food and water.  She is outside at the moment, but I will be bringing her indoors tonight ...

Don't quite know what I'm going to do tomorrow morning when I'm at work.

Oh well, I'm sure we will manage :)

I'll keep you posted

One of ours is broody at the moment , i jhave made up a cage for daytime , but as she is only a wee bantum am worried about leaving her out overnight as the temp has been a tad chilly .Would you guys say its too cold at the moment too ?

yes, hens will huddle together for warmth but never do well in draughts, I would put her in with the others.  Personally I think too much fuss is made about broody hens, all sorts of things are suggested but in my experience hens will stop being broody when they see fit and nothing much makes a difference.  Just make sure they come off the nest to eat and drink and otherwise let them get on with it.  I console myself with the thought that all hens will only lay a certain number of eggs so if they stop for a while there will be more to come later!

I've given up trying to break mine out of their broodiness, I just let them get on with it now. There's always at least one that's broody.
