Tomato problems
« on: July 17, 2011, 17:14 »
I have endeavoured to grow many different varieties of tomatoes this year.  The ones that have not been very successful so far are Brandy Boy - flowers have died off, and Black Cherry - doesn't seem to be doing much at all.
Has anyone else had problems with these varieties?
I'm not young enough to know everything!

Indoors or outdoors?

My black cherry outdoor ones are romping away and just coming into flower.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Sorry!  All my tomatoes are outside.
The Black Cherry seems way behind all my other tomatoes, but the Brandy Boy has been useless.

Have they been well watered? (Up to yesterday that is!)

When I've grown black cherry they were always slightly later than the others and not as prolific.  Must be the Northants air. :)

My Black Cherry are definitely slower than the others. Is Brandy Boy a large tomato like Brandy Wine and Marmande? If so they have less but larger flowers and I've only got 2 lots of flowers so far with plants 4' tall!! They also tend to branch out naturally (even with pinching out) so will need extra support.
All my toms were late flowering so have no trusses in the bottom half but are making up for it on the top half with trusses coming every 4/6".

Brandy Boy looks like a pinker version of Brandywine, which I also have growing alongside my black cherries. I have them in my rear garden and on the plot.

Both look very healthy, in fact better than the greenhouse ones. I have kept them really well watered though through the dry spell.

Give me credit!!   :tongue2:

That's good.  On closer inspection, they do see to have minuscule tomatoes on them.

The Brandy Boy is about 3-4 foot high, the flowers are shrivelling and going brown and the top leaves look none too healthy.  No fruit in sight.  They are right next to two other varieties which are fine.  That is the mystery.  :(

no need to be rude, that was a perfectly sensible answer to your problem - you would be amazed how many people forget to water well.

Maybe too much water.....or just weather damage. Give 'em some time.....they'll put out side shoots. If the whole plant is dying could be something munching in the soil?
