Sickly looking young Brassicas _ help!
« on: April 28, 2011, 20:30 »
Good eevning folks...I've gone n done something stoopid again  ::) but I'm not sure what it was exactly..and I need your help please.

We planted out loads of lovely looking Brassicas at the weekend & now they have lost a lot of their colour although they have not wilted..yet.

They were green house sown, hardened off for just over a week (but last week was a scorcher & this week it certainly is not)..I limed the soil just before planting out as in an old book it shows lime being sprinkled around already planted plants...the odd thing is that lime is Alkaline (correct?) but my tester showed it to be acidic & assumed it was the tester on the blink or not cleaned properly enough...

..oh yea..the land was Glyphosated at the end of March too..but the farmer in the family said it'd be ok to plant out now.

Any ideas?

I am not an experienced brassica grower, but I suspect that it has nothing to do with the glyphosate, but more to do with the change in temperatures and the drought we're experiencing.  Brassicas don' t like heat and it was probably too warm in the greenhouse for them.

Lime is indeed alkaline, and you did the right thing by applying a handful just before planting.

Have you firmed in the plants properly?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It sounds like you have hardened them off properly.

What colour are they  now?

Three things spring to mind..was the lime you used really lime?..., then there is cabbage root fly. They do a lot of damage. I don't know if they are around just now, but it would not surprise me if they are.

Then there is severe club root, but I would think they have not been in the ground long enough for that just yet.

If there is a really poorly one it might be a good idea to pull it up and look at the roots.

You could try giving them a feed.

They have all gone from a proper solid, vibrant colour to a wishy washy, pale colour & only since being planted out. They were desperate to get out of their trays mind you but the ground wasn't dug yet. It did fluff up a lot when dug.

I've tried my best with the green house temperatures but it will have gotten about 30c atr times & they were ok when taken out & in to the cold frame i.e no change - I left the lid off of the cold frame for most of the week.

We planted them as normal (2 years experience) and have watered them well since as it's so bloomin' dry & I definately firmed in the sprouts good n proper as I believe it was that that stopped them developing properly last year.

This plot is new for me & hasn't been planted up in 4 - 5 years or more so I think club root would not be the cause..well not so quickly..I think (?).

Thinking about it ..the ones that didn't make the grade & have just been left in their original trays, outside against the greenhouse & unattended to are looking better than the now not so "gooduns".

It has been chilly & they are exposed...

i think its just the shock of being transplanted out and variation in tempratures. my peas went a bit yellow at the base but the new growth is nice and green, i wouldnt worry too much just yet and youve got some healthy back up plants should the yellow ones not pick up in a few days.
