Lots pf previous posts on this subject. Worth having a look.

I use Hungarian Grazing Rye as the root systems are extensive and good for breaking up heavy soils.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

Mustard and phacelia are easy to manage and grow quickly.

Sow now and either dig them in during the Autumn, best for heavy soils, or leave them as a mulch over Winter, best for light soils.

Hi Salmo

Sorry for a silly question but I'm interested in what you said about using as a mulch for light soil - how exactly would I do that is it a case of sow the seed cut back and leave on top then dig in year Feb/March time??

Thanks
Missy

Exactly right Missy. Mustard will probably die with the frost anyway. Phacelia usually just about survives. When they get too tall cut them down or just trample them. Leave a few phacelia to flower for the insects.

I am using a winter mix of: Crimson Clover, Mustard, Red Clover, Italian Ryegrass. Just sown 100g .

Will also try Winter Tares on another bed.
