another main crop question
« on: August 26, 2010, 11:32 »
I lifted some of my main crop spuds yesterday and they were a really good size. Easily big enough for baking. At the moment I am just lifting them and using as I need them. This is my first time for main crop spuds - what do I do if I want to store them? Is it just a case of lift, dust off the muck and put into spud sacks, Or do I need to leave them on the surface to get thicker skins etc?

Chop off the foliage but leave the spuds under ground, this will let them get better skins
(I think). Then you can wash them and check for any damage, and damaged ones should be used staright away as they wont store, also check for any slugs as they will eat your entire poatoe harvest if you give them half a chance. Then store in hessian sacks in a cool dry (frost free) place. Make sure they dont get direct sunlight as they will turn green, inedile and poisenous.

Hope this helped

I also wash them to check for damage or holes, then leave then to dry for a a hour or sow and bag them, I also put a few slug pellets in the sack just in-case there are slugs left.
As the pellets are in the sacks you cannot affect any wildlife, if you are worried about using them.

Last thing be careful where you store them as I mine were attacked by rats when kept in the shed at the lottie, they ate through the wood to get at them.

I can see why people do wash their spuds, but I recall always reading here not to wash spuds for storage.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Make sure they are properly dry before storing them. Their skins need to 'set' by drying off to toughen them slightly.

Ideally this would be by leaving them on the surface for a day, but as it seems to rain all the time, undercover in the shed mught be better
