Ducks and Geese
« on: August 23, 2010, 21:04 »
Just a quick question for all the duck and geese keepers - which is probably a simple one from a simple hen keeper. Do ducks and geese lay eggs all year round ir is it just seasonal? Its something I've been wondering about for a while now and my curiosity got the better of me!

Not sure about ducks as i only started with them this year myself, but geese are seasonal, they stop laying round end of september beginning of oct, and normally lay there first egg again around valentines day, sometimes a bit earlier
Dont count ya chickens till they hatch!!!!!

I'm not an expert but it depends on the breed. Khaki Campbells are reputed to lay all year round but I think in reality the light levels still affect their laying. Egg laying numbers quoted for all poultry are very generalised and depend on the individual. I have Light Sussex which are supposed to be a very good layer for a pure breed and a Cotswold Legbar which lays, supposedly, fewer eggs per year. However, my best layer is the Legbar! :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Hi D,  I've kept ducks for a couple of years now and they tend to lay most of the year.  During the darkest and coldest winter months last winter they didn't lay from about the beginning of December until about February but the year before that they had a much shorter period when they didn't lay - must just have been our harsh winter!

Ducks also don't usually lay when they're in moult so they may stop laying for a time during July or August although this does seem to depend on the breed.  My aylesbury duck is a very reliable layer and continued to lay throughout her moult!

Some breeds are also less reliable layers in general and you might find that it is normal for your breed of duck not to lay every single day.

Hope this helps  :) :)
