I have just taken on an allotment and it is currently covered in couch grass and other weeds... well it was before i started to attack it.

i have been pulling out the weeds and as much of the roots as i possibly can and because the soil is a but too wet for weeding i now have a big pile of weeds mixed with quite a bit of soil on the roots. i was planning on burning the perennial weeds but i can't really do it with all of the soil attached.

has anyone got any suggestions as to what i can do with the pile as i know it cant go on the compost heap...??

You are right to avoid putting these roots in the compost -- they'll love it and just carry on growing 

You could try shaking as much of the soil off and bagigin them up in black bin bags, then stcking them out of the ay on your plot for about nine months -- they should die and then you can compost them --- I only say nine months because that is how long we left ours in bags and when we looked theye were dead
