octagon 10 and ducks eggs...
« on: April 16, 2009, 07:31 »
how do everyone...

I have got some patrick eggies in my octagon 10 incy...so very precious cargo..(very big thankyou to Kate)!!

I am having problems with the humidity.. i have done everything i can think of to increase it but now I am not sure if it is my hygrometer thats the problem!! there is now way it wants to go up to 80 % and thats with both troughs filled, a wick in there to increase the surface area and an additional pot of water!!

I opened the incy to candle the eggs last night, and I couldnt get the egg tray out!! I think it must have swelled... (I had to take out two eggs which were cracked the other day. I assumed I had missed the cracks on initial inspection after their arrival in the post  :(  but carried on all ok)... I finally got the tray out after having to take all the eggs out in order to yank the tray out (got water everywhere!!)...the egg divider was pushed up out of its slots!! After some choice words I candled the eggs (most seem to be doing a great job) and then found another that has cracked! its like there is too much pressure in there through swelling and it has forced the eggs to press against each other and crack????

I have taken all the extra water out, put the remaining 6 eggs in with some dry sponges to stop the eggs moving about as I didnt want to put the divider back in again.

I have checked the hygrometer this morning and it is reading less than 40%... I havent tried to get the tray out as yet as dont want to keep disturbing the eggs... :(

any suggestions?? anyone else had any problems like this???

Sorry its such a long post

How many days have they been in? what humidity are you trying to reach, 80% sounds a bit high.

Sounds very high to me too  ??? would have thought somewhere between 50/60% would have been better. Only needs to be increased 3/4 days before hatch when you need 75 "ish" % .

Sarah :D

at least i know that i can do 50-60 %!!!

see what happens when you try and be independant and not ask the same ole questions that everyone else has asked!! ya screw it up!!

Dont worry chooknewbie, and never be afraid to ask the old questions again! :D
At day 6 you should be OK as long as the temp has been stable. Humidity is critical the second half of development anyway.
Good luck!

Good luck with your Patrick babies.

Never worry about asking me questions and I don't think Sarah would disagree with me for a second that we would rather aanyone asked questions. I still owe you a huge favour for finding a home and friend for Gerry,

Have you candled the eggs? do you have viable embryos?
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
