"organic" slug pelets
« on: August 14, 2008, 10:18 »
I have toiled away for the past nine months trying to do everything in an organic fashion - given the weeds on my plot were taller than i was when I started you can understand the work put in.

All my hard work seems to be getting wasted though as most of my produce is going towards fattening up the local slug population!!

I have tried beer traps etc etc but with little effect. I have seen "organic" slug pellets for sale.  Can these really be considered organic - after all my hard work I really dont want to just give up my principles over a few slugs!!!

Any ideas for slug killing is greatly appreciated too!!

I know how you feel but myself give up 10 days ago and put some organic pellets down. They have been great. Now reduced them to just around the edge of my raised bed. Thinking of going down the chicken route next year as another alternative. Better the chickens eat my produce than the slugs as at least I’ll get an egg or two out of it.

Know its not a practical solution for everyone but my ducks have completely sorted my slug problem. And the bonus of eggs. My actual veg patch is fenced off to them or they will eat all the tender plants but they free range round the garden and this is the first year I have managed to grow peas or lettuce. Everything else is bigger and better than ususal (not getting eaten by slugs and the duck muck on everything seems to be rocket fuel for plants  )
Know they are not for everyone but I can't praise my ducks enough. Even mow the lawn for me (well a bit  )
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Growing Success pellets were reduced to half price in Wilkinsons last week if anyone wants to try them.

Thanks guys! I've taken the plunge and bought some now!

I've lost one cabbage too many now so it's time for action.

After telling all my neighbours how I am going completely organic feel a little embarresed that my plot now has blue pellets all over it though!

Hi jameshuk.
I have used two with great sucess, garlic made from mashing up garlic bulbs and steeping in water for a few days then sieving and use to spray all over and round the crops.
Also I ahev used a product called SlugGone, it is made from sheeps wool, comes in pellet form and forms a mat when the rain gets on it. I have used this around the base of plants and in baskets etc and have not had a single slug get through onto the plant.

Cheers,

Ooh, those pellets are marvellous! The slugs had started both ends of my rows of carrots and were slowly munching toward the middle until I used them and suddenly had growing carrots again. Hope your cabbages get better too. At least the pellets won't harm anything else.
