I have a large, round plastic tub (around 70 litres) that I've filled with compost/soil and am currently growing two cucumber plants in. I was going to have a crack at growing them vertically, so have pushed in a number of canes around the outer part of the tub.

The aim was then to wrap around some beam netting (with a large 15cm mesh size) in order for the plants to grown up. However attaching mesh to canes is always tricky as it can easily slide down (especially under the weight of vegetables), so I'm wondering about any tips to prevent this? I thought about knocking in a few of those U-shaped tacks into the canes to anchor to, otherwise maybe topping the canes with bottles/balls in order to anchor the netting from the top?

Ideas welcome!

Plastic cable ties, the zip lock type.  ;)

I agree with Lardman, cable ties will do the job, just make sure to fix them above the knuckles on the canes so they won't slide down.

I use them (cable ties) for all sorts of fixing jobs on the allotment and garden, too :D

About 28 four foot lengths of baler twine with at least three knots per length before you start tying is the traditional way ! :nowink:

a really obvious way would be to use a knife and make downward 'nicks' in the cane that you hook your net into... ::)

you could drill narrow holes in the canes - just big enough to thread wire through :)

You do not really need the net, it will probably get in the way. Just wrap some string around the canes and tie it above a few nodes so it does not slip.
Cuke vines will grab on just fine :).
