Chilli leaves going brown and falling off
« on: June 02, 2013, 16:50 »
Hi all, back im feb i germinated 12 lemon drop chilli plants.
6 of them i kept in the 3" pots for far too long and 6 i potted on as you should so theres a noticable size difference between them. of those bigger 6 plants i gave 4 away and kept 2 but after a while i noticed the 2 plants leaves were starting to discolour along the edges and the vains and then drop off.
to my great embarrassment ive recently found out that the 4 plants i gave away have also had the same problem. the 2 on my windowsill have now lost almost all of their bigger leaves and im wondering if they will survive atall. the other smaller 6 plants are looking fine at the moment but could go the same way im thinking.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? i havnt started feeding them yet but there could have been some BF&B in the compost (although thats unlikely) could it be bad compost perhaps? or some sort of diseased seeds?

the picture ive uploaded was when the plants were still healthy and only just being affected.

Im at a total loss with this one so any help would be gratefully received, Thanks.

it looks like blight to me but to be honest, I really don't know what it is.  The fact that the plants you gave away also show the same symptoms suggests they were diseased from the same source - possibly the seed, but I'm wondering about the compost?

I don't think it's blight - very few reports so far.  It looks more like nutrient deficiency or inherent disease.

What compost did you use?

Where did you get the seeds?

Have you been feeding it with anything other than the possible FBB at the start?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

dan, its on that chart as an Aji which is 30.000 - 50.000 (i cant comment on the hotness myself as my plants seem to have the plague at the moment)

Yorkie,
the plants have been on an upstairs windowsill with the window shut since germination so i wasnt thinking blight myself. the compost was goodwins i believe 3 bags for a tenner, although if i was runnning low on the open bag i may have mixed in a little seed compost (i have done that before) and that would have been B&Q verve seed compost. (no other feed would have been used and its unlikely that i would have mixed in bf&b to be honest)
and the seeds were bought from realseeds at the beginning of the year.

if it is a nutrient deficiency what would you recommend i do? im seriously thinking about forking out for some good compost (recommendations would be good) and repotting them.

Thanks in advance!

I think the compost is likely to be OK but it runs out of nutrients after a few weeks - seed compost particularly as it is designed not to be too high in nutrients.

I'd be inclined to give it a liquid general purpose feed (look for the NPK ratio - aiming for fairly similar numbers) if you have access to any, just to get it going quickly. A seaweed extract or similar.  If you have a different liquid feed then that would probably do instead.

I would probably also add something like FBB or similar to keep it going longer term.
