Chilli flowers falling off
« on: September 21, 2010, 22:33 »
i have been growing my habanero chilli's quite well and have lots of flowers on them.
they are now nice and warm in my conservatory to avoid cold weather but all the flowers just keep dropping off.
they look healthy fed and watered to the required amount.
any ideas?

should i just forget this year and try to overwinter them?

thanks

Are those your first flowers or have you already had some chillies from them? If they are the first flowers then they were probably started off too late.

Tapping the plants helps to set the flowers, and in good indoor conditions they will continue to flower (mine are, anyway!) but will eventually succumb to the cooler conditions and shorter days and not produce much more now whatever you do.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

they are the first flowers but over a period of a month and they are just dropping off at the point where they should be changing to chilli's.

I'm with JayG, it's very late in the season for fruit to be forming.

It's not just heat that plants in general require, but light and the days are getting rapidly shorter.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Not sure about Habanero's, but my plants needed to be wind pollenated - try giving them and a little tap or a gentle shake... (as JayG said)

To be fair, alot of my plants are now on their third flowering - have not had to buy Chilli's all Summer!

(Cayenne, Corno Rosso and world beater (pepper))

I have grown 3 or 4 types and my habanero was the worst. I sowed 4 but only one germinated. It was tiny and still looks very sad. It has flowers but no fruit and now the leaves are discoloring and looking like they are slowly dying. My other types on the same windowsil produced lots of fruits. Will try again next year!

try and over winter them. Saying that my over wintered chilli plants have produced nada and my habanero (choc, orange, peach, SB RED) are fantastic this year, no idea why as they are normally useless. Also my Dorset Naga have 4 or 5 nice sized chillies on.. expected nothing to be honest.
