leaves falling off goji bush
« on: July 10, 2013, 09:36 »

I've a three year old goji bush (12ft x 10ft ) , the leaves have a white powder on them which comes off when
 rubbed .
They have also  curled up and a lot of the  leaves  have fallen off .
This has only happened recently and there is a lot of new growth on it .
I was wondering if this is ok or if something is going wrong .

  thanks Carl

I have recently bought a gogi bush and have it in a pot. It was doing really well plenty of growth, but since this hot weather it has got quite a few yellow leaves that are falling off towards the botom of the plant.

I thought it was the hot weather...

Maybe someone can help us?

Although goji berries are a drought tolerant/resistant plant, they can suffer from powdery mildew, which is what you have. Either the bush itself is too tightly packed with branches for good air flow or it's crowded in by other tall plants or trees that restrict good airflow. A too alkaline soil can also cause problems. goji's prefer neutral soil if yours is higher either way.

Another contributing factor can be caused by warm, dry spells or during cool to warm, humid periods. High humidity (greater than 70%) and moderate temperatures (20-30C) are optimum conditions of mildew infections.

You can solve most of this problem by trimming down the top leader branch and thin out some of the side branches so the plant is more compact, and this in turn will increase your yield next year. Many sources also highly recommend top dressing around the goji with compost each spring, never manure or fertilizer, and this should help even out some of the problems.

I forgot to add that the leaves will grow back once the weather settles into better conditions for the bush. If you're not getting much rain, some water at the base will help.
