Hi 

Just wondering if anyone uses sand when planting carrots? what sort and does it make a difference?

I use good quality silver sand have done for years.Sieve soil then mix in me sand works good for me.

You need to use sharp sand not the soft sort used for brick laying

Silver sand is best for adding to soil for carrots. Sharp sand is often used by exhibitors to bore holes into and fill with growing media.

If you're just using the sand to lighten clay soil in beds then sharp sand is fine

Silver sand is common sand without the impurities which give it colour, and like other types may be fine (like builder's sand) or coarser (sharp sand.)

Fine sand of any colour is more likely to get "claggy" when wet so is best avoided.
