I made my own version once, out of one of those big plastic sweet jars.
Cut a small hole in the top made a mesh funnel from car body mesh I had laying about. made a lid that sits up like the yellow top on the redtop.
Put a couple of handfuls of dried cat food in with plenty of water . Worked as well and smelled as bad as a redtop lol

I have 3 in my garden (1/2 acre with loads of trees plus a beck at the side so thousands of flies normally) my redtops are mainly in the shade in the trees and like Richy said they can take a couple of weeks to work. Mine got about 3/4 full with flies then maggots appeared and broke it all down back to half full. They do smell when you are close to them and they are working, but boy the lack of flies in the garden and house is fantastic. Last year we were plagued with flies in the house (had 2 of the fly zapping things going, fly spray, swatters, window stickies and the old fashioned brown sticky tapes - yuk  :tongue2:) but this year I think so far I have had a grand total of 4 flies  :D
Maggots??? Oh No- why don't the flies just drown and get it over and done with!

I have one outside my cavy shed - it is grusomely marvellous and i rejoice in seeing the blasted things drowning in their own greed..........................they are really effective, but i did giggle at the response about the lomonade bottle with liquid poo in!...........................cheaper than ten quid or what?

Hehe!
