tap or water butt water
« on: July 17, 2009, 22:43 »
Hi,

when i first got my chickens i used to fill containers from the tap at home and take that to the allotment but for the last few week I have been giving them rain water we catch in big containers which have filters on the top so no leaves etc gets in. They drink all of it but someone told me that you should only give them fresh tap water - is this true ?

I give my ducks tap water. They largely ignore it and drink from the nearest muddy puddle or pond. I would have thought that rain water would be fine but I may be corrected (I don't have chickens and they seem a bit more prone to lurgies than ducks!).
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Rain water is better for them, no added chemicals, but not when it has been standing too long.

That'd make sense to me...  :)

I think the chickens will look after their own best interest here (?) and, if there's a range of water available, they'll choose the one that tastes the best..  ;)

Think it would depend on quality of the water and the constitution of the chicken

If there's any algae or larvae in it then probably wouldn't risk, though the chickens might find it tasty!

Larvae is fine but not but I wouldn't risk it with algae, means the water has been standing too long.

I think hens should have tap water as the fluoride is good for their teeth.  :D
