Many thanks,

Depends when you want to plant them. I usually plant some in containers in the greenhouse in mid Feb so I have some chitting now.

If you want to hold them back wrap them up well and put them in the fridge. Trouble is once their dormancy is broken it's very hard to stop them growing!!

Last year i bought mine in Dec, kept them in the dark/cold until the begining of Feb and then chitted them for 8 weeks.  They worked fab and i go loads out of them :)

Chit for about 6 weeks before you intend to plant - this applies to all types of potato. Second earlies take 16-17 weeks to mature for harvest. :)

Mine have been chitting for  couple of weeks.

If they are somewhere cool and light there is not a problem and you needn't try holding them back.

Mine were chitting for 4 months from January to May last year, they still went in with good sturdy chits and I had a fantastic crop,  of which I still have some in storage.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Chit for about 6 weeks. Bung them in around end Mar/ Early Apr, dependent on weather.

I wouldn't worry about chitting too early Half A Plot Man, they really are fine to start chitting now... on top of the kitchen cupboard seems to work well for me, not too bright, not too dark, and relatively out of the way.
Some people on the forum start chitting theirs as early as December, and some start two months later... and all with great success...

I think the learning from that is, potatoes really want to grow!!

I'm in the early chit camp myself. Never had a problem getting a really good crop, even from seed potatoes that went in extremely late (June/July!) and had they chits the size of knuckles by then, while the spud bit looked a little on the wizened side!!
