Sweet smelling bush, what is it
« on: July 10, 2009, 18:50 »
Hi
A few weeks ago my wife and i had a visit to Elvaston Castle in Derbyshire, there is an "Old English" garden there. Just as we walked in the gate, there was a wonderfull smell like bubble gum or sweets from the sweet shop. It was a bush about 4 ft high, with white flowers, lots of them, and it was really sweet smelling. Can some kind person give me a clue as to when it could be.

Possibly a Philadelphus (Mock orange) There are several varieties with different shaped flowers, some single, some double.

Here is some more information. Hope this helps with ID  :D

They are easy enough to find. Bear in mind that they might have finished flowering for this year though so you might have to ask where they are. Some garden centres display seasonal shrubs up front and have the others in alphabetical order elsewhere. Trouble is, you don't ever know whose idea of alphabetical it is

Lots of different sorts. Ours is a golden leaved double, and  friend opposite has dark green leaved variety,, with single white flowers with a maroon bloth inside  :) :)
