What you need to do is allocate an area where the worst thing you could wish for is a hawthorn and within a month, you'll find a seedling growing !  ::)

We have several in really inconvenient places but I'm too soft to dig them out.

The advice seems to be that it's easier to buy saplings than mess with cuttings. At least you'll know that they'll all take and grow away quickly.

Hawthorn is grown from seed
Quickest way for your hedge would be to buy in some plants, they are available as strong 1 or 2 year old plants, 2-3 ft high for just pence but unfortunately sold as bare root plants in the winter ! Best to wait til Nov and find a real nursery
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

I bought and planted some yr old hathorn saplings this winter to fill in a large gap in my allotment  hedge. They were only 50p each. Bit late to plant them now though, you'll be better off planting them when there is no leaf on them - ie Nov - Feb/early March.

Hawthorn bushes are very useful for growing honeysuckle up them.
