my first cauliflower
« on: July 19, 2009, 09:03 »
Very much a beginner as you will no doubt guess, however I shall swallow my pride and just ask this silly question. What has happened to my cauliflower, it was all going so well and then the flower has separated and the little bits have started to grow tall themselves.
1- What has happened, has it flowered?
2-Can I still eat it?
many thanks
Thinking of calling my shed "the Dun Inn".

You've left it a bit too long and it's starting to run to seed. It's still edible.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

that happened last year with mine; I should have harvested them when they were individual portion sized but left them to get bigger and they all ran to seed.  Chooks still ate them though!

Last years variety was 'All Year Round' but this year I grew 'Mayflower' or perhaps 'Mayfair' (can't quite remember the variety name) and they have grown huge and with no problems, in fact I'm having trouble keeping up with them!

Erm they have obviously gone too far, but are best to be used in cauliflower cheese making as the quality does nto have to be as good as those you just 'boil and eat for sunday dinner'.
