Keeping out Mr Fox
« on: October 17, 2007, 13:58 »
I am planning to get some chickens @ my allotment in the spring. I grew up on a farm so am well aware of how persistent a fox can be!

The allotment is well out of earshot, so I'm pretty concerned about something happening when no-one is around. My husband is pretty handy and is drawing up plans for a coop and built on run at the moment. I want to be able to move the whole thing every couple of weeks and so was looking at putting mesh under the run, so even if Mr Fox did dig under he wouldn't be able to get up into the run. Is this a good idea, any other suggestions :?:

2 inch   with thinner mesh chicken aviary wire around the bottom or if you use a planking base up to about 2ft which i would do if your on an allotment then they will also have wind protection and from rats and stoats etc  :)

So 2 x 2 weld mesh on the ground as a 'scratch mat', sides as 1 x 1/2 weld mesh with a 6 inch plank at ground level for wind protection. Corrugated sheets for roof, Hope this seems OK? What mm thick wire will stop Foxy?

planking up to 2ft will be better  all around the sides to keep out all bad guys   but if you use weld mesh down to the ground make it 2x2 but use a finer chicken wire 1/2x 1/2 to keeprats n stoats etc out  if that have wood up from the ground aways the bad guys cant climb up and get in
