Hi All, my onions do not seem to be growing and the leaves are dry and yellow. I do not thing it is White Rot or Mildew. My allotment is very dry at the moment ,much like most of the country,could it be drought conditions ?Any advice would be great.

ive lost a fair few this year (i put some more sets in after the others that birds (or something!!) had taken)

They started growing, then yellowed and died

Ive put it down to the dry weather as i failed to water the onion beds at all

Dry weather.

They are shallow rooted and need to be kept watered during periods like this.

I haven`t watered mine but some of my spring planted sets are as big as the autumn ones, which is a way of saying the autumn ones are pretty rubbish. They do have mildew and there is evidence of it on a few of the spring sets leaves,although this doesn`t seem to have got worse over the last few days.

Where the spring sets are was dug in November and just raked level and some compost added on the day of planting, thus the soil more than three or four inches down was not disturbed and moisture was retained. That`s my theory anyway.
