I was wondering does anybody know how long chillies and peppers take to start growing?

I bought about eight different of chilli seeds off ebay (i know i really shouldn't have bought them from there but it seemed a good deal at the time ).

The chillies were planted maybe a two and a half - three weeks ago but are still showing no signs of life. My tomato plants are starting to grow, so im sure the house is warm enough. :?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

What are they Kerry, different varities will germinate at different times, Cayenne are pretty quick but others like Habernero's etc can be a few weeks, be patient, keep them warm and wait to see.

I'd agree, no use to compare to tomato in the germination dep, some can take much much longer. Be patient. Says she.

If it's any comfort to you, I planted my chillis and peppers two weeks ago and there's no sign of life.  They're all supposed to be early varieties but they do need 25-30 deg C to germinate.

They were on a sunny windowsill, but yesterday I moved them to my shiny new plastic-covered "greenhouse" in the (unheated) conservatory.  It was a sunny day yesterday and it got up to 40 deg C.  If that doesn't get them going I don't know what will:!:

As Aidy said, different varieties take different times to germinate, some of mine have already shot up but as always the habeneros are lagging behind.

i tend to start all mine off in a home made heated propogator but i know lots of people have success with a damp bit of kitchen towl and an airing cupboard.

as for varieties for chilli virgins...check out woolworths/wilkinsons as they have some great kits that make it easy to get started.

One of the bomb proof type, with a reasonable heat level, that can be dried and used thoughout the winter, Cayenne types. This was my first chilli I grew, very reliable.

my cayenne peppers took six weeks to pop, sweet capsicums were up in about a week. Planted some habinero seeds two weeks ago, but I am expecting those to take quite some time.

All the best, my cayennes are on the third node now, very proud of them.

Hi everyone thanks for all your help i guess everyone is sort of having the same problems as me.

The chillies i'm attempting to grow are cayenne and pimento.

Just checked on them and still sadly no sign of life. Tomorrow or Saturday if i have time i will plant some more and see how they go. Just hoping it works.

Who did you buy them from?

http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/southams-seeds

It sounds like where I got mine=and all of mine are now up!  I have had them near the fire, on a table, for about 2 weeks in the living room.

Habanero Orange, Tepin, Jalapeno, Scotch Bonnet Yellow, Hot Banana, Big Jim and Congo Black.

Some took longer than others but when I moved them nearer the fire they all started showing their heads!
